Washing machine won't drain — what to check first
Three checks you can safely do yourself before calling an engineer, from filter cleaning to drain-hose inspection.

This guide walks through the safe checks you can do yourself before booking a professional repair. If any step feels beyond you, stop and book a visit.
Step-by-step checks
- Isolate at the socket. Switch the machine off at the wall before working near the filter or pump.
- Clean the pump filter. Usually behind a small hatch at the front-bottom. Have towels ready — expect residual water.
- Check the drain hose. Kinks, blockages, or a too-high loop can stop water leaving. The hose should sit 60–90cm above floor level.
- Test a rinse & spin cycle. If it still won't drain, the pump or pressure switch may have failed.
Safety notes
- Never remove the front pump filter while the drum still contains water above the door glass line.
- If you see scorch marks or smell burnt plastic, stop and book a repair — the pump motor may have failed.
When to book a repair
If the pump filter is clear and the hose is unobstructed but the machine still won't drain, the drain pump or pressure sensor typically needs replacing.
