Fridge not cold enough — what to check tonight

This guide walks through the safe checks you can do yourself before booking a professional repair. If any step feels beyond you, stop and book a visit.
Step-by-step checks
- Confirm the temperature setting. Fridge: 3–5°C. Freezer: -18°C. Check with a fridge thermometer.
- Give the coils some space. Fridges pushed flush to a wall can overheat. Leave 5cm clearance at the back.
- Vacuum the condenser coils. Dust on the back or beneath causes overheating and poor cooling.
- Check the door seals. Same paper test as above.

- If perishables have been above 8°C for 4+ hours, discard high-risk foods (dairy, meat, cooked rice).
When to book a repair
If settings and airflow are correct but the fridge won't hold temperature, the compressor or thermostat needs professional diagnosis.
